A More Versatile Instagram: Floating Reels Player Enters Testing

Date:

Instagram is evolving into a more versatile and flexible platform with the introduction of a floating Reels player, which is now in a limited testing phase. This Picture-in-Picture (PiP) functionality is part of a broader push to make the app more user-friendly and modern.

The new feature will allow a Reel to “undock” from the main feed and continue playing in a small, movable window that sits on top of other applications. This versatility means users can adapt the app to their own multitasking needs, rather than being locked into a single, full-screen experience.

This newfound versatility is expected to be a major benefit for content creators. The more ways a user can consume content, the more likely they are to stay engaged, leading to higher watch times. The feature is still experimental but will be optional if it receives a wider release.

This move toward a more versatile platform is further exemplified by the launch of a native iPad app. By offering a tailored experience for tablets, Instagram is showing it can adapt its interface to different devices and use cases effectively.
