Mississippi officials have officially authorized 41 permanent methane gas turbines for Elon Musk’s xAI, marking a major milestone in the company’s infrastructure buildout. The MDEQ’s Permit Board issued the air permit on Tuesday, allowing xAI to scale its power generation to support the massive “Colossus” datacenter network. This approval comes as xAI positions itself as a dominant player in the global AI market.
The turbines are designed to produce approximately 1.2 gigawatts of power, enough to supply a large city, exclusively for AI training. This dedicated energy source is required for the “Macrohardrr” facility, which is currently being retrofitted in an 800,000-square-foot building in Southaven. Musk has stated that this expansion will push xAI’s total training compute to the most powerful on Earth.
Public reaction has been overwhelmingly negative, with residents and activists accusing the state of prioritizing “convenience over justice.” The timing of the permit hearing—on a federal primary election day—has been labeled by the NAACP as a “deliberate attempt” to suppress local participation. Opponents argue that the MDEQ’s standard procedures were used as a shield to ignore the voices of affected families.
The environmental stakes are high, with the facility projected to emit significant levels of smog-forming nitrogen oxides and formaldehyde. Residents have already filed hundreds of complaints regarding “excruciating” noise levels from the site’s previous unpermitted operations. Environmental compliance experts have noted that the 41 turbines could make the Southaven facility a top industrial polluter in the entire region.
Despite the social and environmental friction, the $20 billion project is moving forward at “warp speed” with full support from the Mississippi state government. Governor Tate Reeves has described the investment as a “record-shattering” opportunity for economic development and high-tech job creation. The looming federal lawsuit by the NAACP remains the only major obstacle to xAI’s localized power monopoly.
