In a recent meeting in Azerbaijan, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called on Israel to cease its settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank and address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. According to China’s Foreign Ministry, Wang emphasized the importance of finding a political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and described it as a significant historical injustice.
Wang’s discussions with Israeli President Isaac Herzog highlighted China’s position on the need for a two-state solution, advocating for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel. He also stressed the necessity of expanding humanitarian access to Gaza, pointing out the deteriorating conditions there and expressing China’s willingness to collaborate with the international community to facilitate dialogue and peace.
Herzog acknowledged the focus of the talks was on bilateral relations and the broader regional dynamics. He reiterated Israel’s commitment to peace while underscoring Israel’s security concerns, particularly in relation to Iran and its allies in the region.
The ongoing fragile situation in Gaza, despite a ceasefire initiated in October 2025, remains a concern. Continuous Israeli strikes, displacement issues, and humanitarian challenges persist. Meanwhile, progress towards advancing the ceasefire agreement has been hindered by mutual accusations of violations from both Israel and Hamas.
This meeting underscores continuing global efforts to address the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, improve conditions in Gaza, and revive diplomatic negotiations. China’s active engagement reflects its longstanding support for Palestinian reconciliation and diplomatic initiatives aimed at reducing tensions in the Middle East.
