Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has firmly stated that Israeli forces will not leave Gaza until Hamas is fully disarmed. This stance comes in defiance of a US-backed proposal that aims to tie the withdrawal of troops to a broader peace deal. According to Israeli officials, intelligence reports suggest that Hamas is actively recruiting new fighters and rebuilding its military capabilities. Israel argues that pulling back troops before Hamas is completely disarmed could allow the militant group to regain control of Gaza, thereby posing renewed security threats.
The peace proposal, brokered by the United States, outlines a framework where Hamas would relinquish its weapons and dismantle its network of tunnels. It also suggests a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces and the creation of a Palestinian technocratic government, alongside an international security force deployment and reconstruction efforts in Gaza.
Recent Israeli airstrikes have reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 17 individuals, including children. In a separate incident, a mass funeral was held by Palestinians after rescue teams discovered more than 100 bodies in the wreckage of a significant Israeli airstrike in the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City in November 2023. Rescue operations are ongoing as many victims are believed to still be trapped under the debris.
This current conflict erupted following a deadly attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, which targeted southern Israel. The assault resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and the abduction of 251 hostages, setting off the continuing warfare in Gaza.
