In an effort to address the rising tide of AI-generated music, Spotify is set to implement new strategies aimed at identifying and managing AI-generated artists on its platform. Starting in September, the streaming service will label AI-created artist identities as “AI personas” on both artist profiles and track listings. This initiative is designed to help users differentiate between authentic musicians and artificial identities, while safeguarding the exposure of real artists against the growing presence of AI-generated content.
Under the new guidelines, AI personas will not be included in personalized recommendations by default, making it easier for listeners to come across genuine artists. Spotify plans to allow artists to voluntarily declare if their identities are AI-generated. Additionally, the platform will deploy a combination of human reviewers and AI technology to detect any AI personas that have not been disclosed. This strategy underscores Spotify’s commitment to maintaining transparency as the prevalence of generative AI in the music industry continues to expand.
The decision comes in response to the surge in AI-generated music, with Spotify previously announcing that it had removed a staggering 75 million spam tracks over a 12-month period. This figure highlights the significant volume of artificial and low-quality content that is infiltrating music platforms, posing a challenge to traditional musicians seeking to maintain their visibility and reach.
As AI technology becomes more integrated into the music creation process, Spotify recognizes the growing demand from listeners to understand whether a track is the work of a human artist or an AI-generated entity. The company emphasizes the importance of transparency in this context, striving to ensure that users remain informed about the nature of the music they are consuming.
