Israel and Greece Strengthen Naval Cooperation with Joint Mediterranean Drill

Date:

In a move to bolster defense ties amid heightened regional tensions, Israel and Greece have conducted a joint naval exercise in the Mediterranean Sea. This military collaboration comes against the backdrop of growing disagreements over maritime boundaries, particularly following a recent maritime-boundaries agreement between Libya and Türkiye, which both Israel and Greece oppose.

The exercise featured Israeli missile boats alongside vessels from several Greek naval units, under the leadership of Israeli Navy Chief Vice Admiral Eyal Harel and his Greek counterpart, Vice Admiral Dimitrios-Eleftherios Kataras. The joint maneuvers included practicing operational scenarios such as identifying and countering maritime threats, coordinated sailing, and executing missile attacks against a simulated enemy vessel.

The Israeli military emphasized the importance of this drill as a step towards enhancing operational coordination, joint readiness, and ensuring freedom of navigation in the Mediterranean. Vice Admiral Harel highlighted that cooperation with Greece would strengthen the capability of both nations to work together in promoting regional security.

This naval exercise underscores the deepening defense partnership between Israel and Greece, a relationship that has grown significantly as both countries seek to enhance security cooperation. In contrast, relations between Israel and Türkiye have deteriorated, influenced by disagreements over policies and the conflict in Gaza.

The joint military exercise underlines the strategic significance of naval cooperation and maritime security in the Mediterranean, as regional powers navigate complex and competing interests in the area. The collaboration between Israel and Greece reflects a shared commitment to maintaining stability and addressing security challenges in a region marked by geopolitical tensions.
