As global tech giants continue to expand their technological reach, Google is making a significant investment in Israel by establishing a new engineering team dedicated to artificial intelligence chip development. This strategic expansion highlights Google’s ongoing commitment to advancing AI capabilities, particularly for edge devices such as robots, autonomous systems, and various connected technologies.
The new initiative will be spearheaded by Guy Kaminitz, who has been appointed as the head of silicon engineering. Kaminitz brings valuable expertise from his previous role as an R&D executive at Hailo, an Israeli AI chipmaker. His leadership will guide the recruitment of dozens of engineers focusing on critical roles in chip validation, physical design, verification, automation, and machine-learning hardware architecture.
Google’s latest venture in Israel will concentrate on developing Edge AI processors. These processors enable AI applications to function directly on devices, minimizing reliance on cloud computing. This technological advancement is crucial for enhancing the efficiency and speed of various systems, including robots, drones, autonomous vehicles, industrial systems, and smart cameras.
The establishment of this engineering team builds upon Google’s previous expansion into chip design and development within Israel, which began in 2021. Since 2005, Google has maintained a strong presence in the region, with research and development teams focusing on artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, and machine perception.
This move underscores Google’s strategic efforts to bolster its AI capabilities and innovation through leveraging the local expertise and technological environment in Israel. By investing in cutting-edge chip technology for edge devices, Google is positioning itself at the forefront of AI development, catering to the growing demand for smart, autonomous, and connected solutions.
