Global Trade Risk: EU Warns Trump’s Tariff Threat Might Cause Instability

Date:

Focusing on the global trade risk, the EU warns Trump’s tariff threat might cause widespread instability. Defending the principle of sovereignty, European leaders have strongly criticized President Trump’s attempt to link trade tariffs to the purchase of Greenland. In response, an emergency meeting of envoys has been scheduled for Sunday.

The joint statement from Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa highlighted the risks of the US administration’s approach. They warned that tariffs could trigger a “downward spiral” that would be difficult to reverse. The leaders emphasized that Europe would remain united and coordinated, standing firm against external pressure.

The economic threat involves a progressive tariff structure. Trump stated that a 10% tariff would be applied to goods from Denmark, the UK, France, and others starting February 1. He warned that this would rise to 25% on June 1 if the US does not succeed in buying Greenland, placing a direct cost on exporters.

The EU also sought to diffuse tensions regarding military activities in the High North. Leaders stated that the Danish exercises were routine, pre-coordinated, and posed no threat to anyone. They reiterated that the EU and the US share a common interest in preserving peace and security in the Arctic.

Solidarity with Denmark is the central theme of the EU’s reaction. Leaders confirmed that talks between the US and Denmark began last week but insisted that the bloc acts as one. The emergency meeting on Sunday will be pivotal in demonstrating that the EU cannot be divided.
