Kaoru Mitoma’s precisely placed far-corner finish rescued a valuable point for Brighton & Hove Albion in their 1-1 draw with Manchester City on Wednesday. The result extends the champions’ winless run to three Premier League matches and leaves them five points behind Arsenal.
City had taken the lead four minutes before halftime when Erling Haaland converted a penalty awarded after Diego Gomez fouled Jeremy Doku in the box. VAR confirmed the decision, and Haaland made no mistake from the spot. The goal was his 150th for Manchester City, ended a three-match scoring drought, and took him to 20 Premier League goals for the season.
The second half saw City push for a crucial second goal. Bernardo Silva had an excellent opportunity when he intercepted a Brighton error, but his shot rebounded off the post. The match’s intensity increased when a confrontation erupted between City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Brighton’s Maxim De Cuyper, with both players receiving yellow cards.
Mitoma’s equalizer in the 60th minute was a strike of genuine quality. The Japanese winger received a pass from the flank, took a touch to position himself at the edge of the penalty area, and guided a low shot into the far corner with precision, giving Donnarumma no chance.
Brighton assumed control after leveling the score, slowing the game’s rhythm and building attacks carefully. They nearly completed the comeback when Mitoma’s creative play found Gomez inside the penalty area, but the midfielder’s shot was saved by Donnarumma. Mitoma’s attempt to convert the rebound from near the goal line struck the post. City had one final chance to claim victory when Haaland broke through in stoppage time, but Verbruggen’s superb save ensured the spoils were shared.
