Oil Prices Driven by Hormuz Disruptions, Inventory Decline to Surpass $90

Date:

Oil prices have experienced their largest weekly surge since April, yet experts suggest that Brent crude will require a sustained disruption in the Strait of Hormuz or definitive indications of tightening global supplies to surpass the $90 per barrel mark. On Friday, Brent crude hovered around $85, reflecting an approximate 11% rise over the week, while the U.S. benchmark, West Texas Intermediate, neared $80. This uptick comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran, which have disrupted Middle Eastern supply routes and curtailed tanker traffic through the critical Strait of Hormuz.

Despite the escalating situation in the region, Brent crude has found it challenging to exceed this week’s peak of $87.55 per barrel. Market analysts point out that traders are still counting on diplomatic initiatives to avert a prolonged crisis. The Strait of Hormuz is pivotal for global energy markets, as about 20% of the world’s oil transits through this narrow passage. Consequently, tanker movements have decelerated, with shipping firms vigilantly monitoring the security environment in the area.

The ramifications of these developments are already apparent in fuel markets. In the United States, refining margins have climbed as diesel and gasoline supplies become tighter, whereas European fuel markets are also experiencing mounting pressure. Further complications in Russian exports have exacerbated worries regarding worldwide supply levels.

Experts assert that unless there is a marked decline in inventories or a significant escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran, leading to a prolonged obstruction of shipping through Hormuz, oil prices are unlikely to decisively breach the $90 threshold. At present, traders are primarily concentrating on diplomatic progress and supply data, which will play a crucial role in determining the next significant shift in global oil markets.
